Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) vs LCA: is one a subset of the other?
PCF is a single-indicator LCA summary; a full LCA delivers 19+ indicators. The link to ISO 14067, GHG Protocol Product Standard and EN 15804+A2.

Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) and a full LCA are often used interchangeably but they are not the same. PCF is a specific subset of an LCA — reporting only the climate-change impact (GWP). A full LCA presents GWP alongside 18+ additional impact categories (acidification, eutrophication, resource depletion, water use, etc.).
PCF standards
- ISO 14067:2018 — Greenhouse gases — Carbon footprint of products. The most widespread international PCF standard
- PAS 2050 — British Standards Institution's 2008/2011 specification; largely superseded by ISO 14067
- GHG Protocol Product Standard — joint WRI/WBCSD standard; popular in the US market
- EN 15804+A2 GWP-fossil indicator — the PCF equivalent inside a construction-product EPD
Is generating a PCF easier than a full LCA?
No — the underlying work is almost identical. Life cycle inventory, scope definition, functional unit choice, allocation rules, data-quality requirements all apply to PCF too. Only the output narrows to one indicator. PCF is not a "shortcut" — it is a presentation slice of the full LCA. In construction materials, PCF alone is rarely requested anymore; the EPD typically requires all 19 indicators.
Where is PCF alone sufficient?
PCF alone suffices in: (1) consumer-product packaging labelling (kg CO₂eq/product); (2) corporate Scope 3 reporting (GHG Protocol); (3) bilateral B2B carbon footprint reporting; (4) climate-goal investment documentation (TCFD, CDP). In construction materials, green-building certification and regulatory reporting (EU Taxonomy, draft ESPR) require a full LCA.
EN 15804+A2 GWP-fossil — embedded PCF
A practical point: if you have an EN 15804+A2 EPD, your PCF is already inside — GWP-fossil is exactly what PCF reports. There is no need for a separate ISO 14067 study; pull GWP-fossil from your EPD and use it in PCF communications. This gives you "building-certification market AND consumer-packaging label" dual use from the same LCA model.
Position in sustainability reporting
Modern sustainability-reporting frameworks (TCFD, CDP, GRI 305, EU Taxonomy) take PCF as the headline input but require full LCA as context. For example, the EU Taxonomy "substantial contribution to climate-change mitigation" criterion needs the GWP-fossil profile; the "do no significant harm" criterion requires no significant worsening across the other 18 indicators. Modern reporting therefore drifts toward PCF + full LCA combined.
