Green-building certifications (LEED, BREEAM, DGNB) and the role of EPDs
The three leading green-building certifications use EPDs differently in their scoring categories. A practical EPD-value map for manufacturers.

Green-building certifications are the "consumer market" for product-level EPDs — architects or building owners use EPD-bearing products for certification points. Three systems stand out: LEED (US-based, global), BREEAM (UK-based, broad in Europe), DGNB (Germany). Each scores EPDs in different categories, creating distinct market angles for your product.
LEED v4.1 — Materials & Resources Credits
LEED v4.1 awards 2 points under "MR Credit: Building Product Disclosure and Optimization — Environmental Product Declarations". First point: 20 different EPDs from 20 different manufacturers. Second point: products documented with "Industry-wide" or "Product-specific" EPDs. The US market accepts "industry-wide"; "product-specific" is not mandatory. LEED also has an "Embodied Carbon" optimisation MR Credit requiring a Whole Life Carbon calculation — here EN 15978 takes EPDs as inputs.
BREEAM — Mat 01 and Mat 03
BREEAM awards 12-15 points under "Mat 01: Environmental Impacts from Construction Products". It weights manufacturer-specific EPDs heavily; "industry-wide" EPDs receive lower scores. Mat 03 "Sustainable Procurement" adds points for local / sustainable sourcing. BREEAM dominates the EU and Middle Eastern markets — green-building projects in Turkey are often BREEAM-compliant.
DGNB — ENV1.1 and ENV2.1
DGNB (Germany) is considered Europe's strictest green-building certification. EPD data is mandatory input under ENV1.1 "Climate Action" and ENV2.1 "Local Environmental Impact". A DGNB-certified building requires manufacturer-specific EN 15804+A2 EPDs for every main material; "industry-wide" is not enough. DGNB looks at all 19 indicators rather than a single GWP — meaning your product's full environmental profile is exposed.
Market matrix for manufacturers
- US market + global project → LEED-compliant EPD; "Industry-wide" suffices
- EU + UK + Middle East → BREEAM-compliant, manufacturer-specific EPD
- Germany + DGNB-certified investments → IBU-published EN 15804+A2 EPD
- Scandinavia → BREEAM Nordic or Svanen → EPD International preferred
- Turkey → BREEAM-heavy; ITB-published EPD practical
Integration into building LCA calculation
How does your EPD enter the building calculation? The architect or certification consultant lists all materials; for each, EPD data (usually JSON-LD or Excel) is collected. EN 15978 then aggregates per "1 m² gross internal area" with weighted summation. Delivering your EPD in machine-readable JSON-LD speeds this up — manual copy errors from Excel disappear.
