BREEAM Mat 01: how the life cycle impacts credit works
BREEAM assesses materials by building element rather than one by one. The logic of Mat 01 and what it means for a manufacturer.

BREEAM is a UK-origin green building assessment system widely used across Europe. Mat 01, the heaviest credit under materials, works on different logic from LEED: it assesses building elements rather than individual products.
Element-based assessment
Mat 01 assesses the life cycle impact of principal building elements — external walls, roof, floors, internal partitions. What is assessed is not one brick's EPD but the total performance of the wall build-up that brick sits in. That puts material decisions in a systems context.
The advantage is that it makes trade-offs visible. An insulation with higher embodied carbon but lower thickness may need less material in the overall wall build-up and win at element level. A product-by-product assessment cannot see that.
The building LCA requirement
The higher tiers of the credit require an EN 15978-compliant building life cycle assessment and expect evidence that design alternatives were compared. The calculation has to be part of the design process, not merely produce a report at the end.

What changes for a manufacturer
Element-based assessment asks a manufacturer for more than an EPD: data showing the product's performance within the system — thickness, service life, mass per unit area, installation waste. A manufacturer supplying that alongside the EPD makes the design team's job easier and improves the odds of being specified.
The declared reference service life also converts directly into points here. A longer-lived product creates less burden in module B4 and gains at element level. Which is why the service life declaration needs to be substantiated.
