What is the difference between a life cycle assessment and an EPD?

One is a calculation, the other a document. Every EPD has an LCA behind it, but not every LCA becomes an EPD — and the difference lies in who it is prepared for.

The shortest answer: an LCA is a calculation, an EPD is a document. Every EPD has an LCA behind it, but not every LCA becomes an EPD. The relationship is like that between financial statements and an audit report — one produces the data, the other makes it defensible to the outside world.

Difference in purpose

An LCA is a decision-support instrument. It is run to compare design options, find hotspots, assess suppliers and prioritise improvements. Its result usually stays inside the company and can be re-run freely.

An EPD is a communication instrument. It is prepared to present your product’s environmental data to the market, to buyers, to tenders and to certification schemes. That is why it is published publicly, and why its rules are strict.

  • Standard — an LCA follows ISO 14040/14044; an EPD is additionally subject to ISO 14025 and, for construction products, EN 15804
  • Rule set — in an LCA you make the methodological calls yourself with justification; in an EPD the PCR fixes them for you
  • Verification — optional in an LCA (except for comparative assertions); mandatory by an accredited verifier for an EPD
  • Publication — an LCA report can stay internal; an EPD is published publicly by a program operator
  • Scope — an LCA can report whichever indicators you choose; an EPD must report the full set the PCR defines
  • Comparability — two LCAs are rarely comparable; two EPDs under the same PCR are
  • Validity — an LCA has no expiry; an EPD is typically valid five years and is reissued if production changes

Latitude: the real difference

Every other difference follows from this one. In an LCA you define the functional unit, draw the system boundary and choose the allocation method — you need only justify them. That flexibility makes LCA a powerful design tool but renders results incomparable: two analysts reaching different numbers for the same product is entirely normal.

An EPD removes that flexibility deliberately. The PCR forces everyone in a category to calculate on the same assumptions. The flexibility lost is the price of the comparability gained — and to a buyer, comparability is worth far more than flexibility.

Which one do you need?

  • Making a design decision, comparing materials or hunting hotspots — an LCA suffices
  • A customer, tender or green building scheme asks for a document — you need an EPD
  • Feeding your corporate Scope 3 account — an LCA suffices, though asking suppliers for EPDs raises data quality
  • Comparing your product against competitors in public — you need an EPD or a panel-reviewed comparative LCA
  • Preparing a CBAM declaration — neither; CBAM is a separate calculation with its own boundary and rule set

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a product life cycle and an EPD?
The product life cycle is the physical stages a product passes through from raw material to waste — the object being measured. LCA is the method that measures those stages. An EPD is that measurement turned into a document: compliant with product category rules, independently verified and published publicly.
I have had an LCA done — can it be converted into an EPD?
Usually yes, but not automatically. Your existing LCA must meet the functional unit, system boundary, module coverage and indicator set the applicable PCR requires. If it does not, the model is adapted — much faster than starting over, because the raw data survives.
Can I compare the EPDs of two different products?
Only if both were prepared under the same PCR and carry the same declared unit and module coverage. That warning is printed on most EPD cover pages. Setting two declarations from different PCRs side by side is a methodological error.
