What is an ecological footprint? How it differs from a carbon footprint

One measures hectares, the other tonnes. The two are constantly confused and end up in the wrong place in company reports.

An ecological footprint measures the biologically productive area needed to produce the resources a population consumes and absorb the waste it generates. Its unit is the global hectare (gha). A carbon footprint measures greenhouse gas emissions, in tonnes of CO₂ equivalent. They are two separate indicators measuring different things in different units.

Biocapacity and overshoot

The ecological footprint’s real strength is that it has a supply side. Biocapacity is the biologically productive area the planet can regenerate in a year. When the footprint exceeds biocapacity, we are consuming capital. Earth Overshoot Day is the date humanity exhausts that year’s biocapacity, and it moves earlier each year.

A carbon footprint has no such supply side; an emissions figure on its own is not compared against a limit. That makes the ecological footprint powerful in communication — and also limits its applicability at company level.

Why it is rare in company reports

The ecological footprint produces meaningful results at national and individual level; at product and company level it has two problems. First, it reduces different impact types to a single area unit, and that reduction embeds methodological assumptions. Second, most of the calculation is already the carbon component — emissions are converted into the forest area needed to absorb them.

Which is why the standardised frameworks at corporate and product level — the GHG Protocol, ISO 14064, ISO 14067, EN 15804 — use separate impact indicators rather than an ecological footprint. In LCA, land use is already reported as an indicator in its own right.

Which to use when

  • Ecological footprint — public communication, education, policy debate at national or city level
  • Carbon footprint — corporate target setting, supply chain requests, product declarations, regulatory compliance
  • Full LCA — design decisions, material comparison, seeing the risk of burden shifting
  • Water footprint — chains operating in water-scarce regions or with agricultural inputs
